We recently returned from an extremely interesting trip to Prague and Budapest.  I didn’t realize how much history I would learn while I was there.   We all hear the stories of WWII, the Holocaust and Communism in Eastern Europe (”behind the iron curtain”) but actually being there and hearing the stories of what everyday people like you and I had to go through during those troubled times puts it in a new, closer-to-home perspective.  Some of my family came from this part of the world and many luckily escaped death from the Nazi’s by coming to America.  Others were not so lucky.

Prague is a beautiful, vital city that was spared bombing during WWII, so it has many different types of architecture, well preserved, from many different periods of history.  Budapest rebuilt itself after the destruction during WWII.  Unfortunately it was rebuilt during its communistic days.  Buildings built during this period epitomized what communism was like for the people: gray, stark, prison-like, poorly constructed.  Aesthetics were of no concern at all so beauty was out, working hard, solely for the government was in.  Still, Budapest was very interesting and definitely worth visiting.
