]]> http://skin1.com/blog/2008/12/lumigan-2008-12-12.html/feed How to Soften Dry Scaley Feet http://skin1.com/blog/2008/12/how-to-soften-dry-scaley-feet.html http://skin1.com/blog/2008/12/how-to-soften-dry-scaley-feet.html#comments Wed, 10 Dec 2008 19:46:20 +0000 Dr. Klein http://skin1.com/blog/?p=386 Many of my patients (and myself included) develop dry, thick, scaley skin on the bottom of their feet, especially their heels.  This seems to be worse in the summer when many of us wear sandles and go barefoot.  This occasionally may be athlete’s foot (a fungus infection) but it is usually just your body’s way of toughening up your skin.  Most of us don’t appreciate it however and would prefer softer, smoother skin.  One way to improve it is to have a therapeutic pedicure, but have it at a reputable spa or salon, like my spas: Euro Day Spa. If you go elsewhere make sure that the equipment and instruments they use are sterilized and clean.  Also, do not let them shave down your calluses, this can create tender areas and even an infection.

An easy fix for making your skin soft and smooth at home is to use a strong glycolic acid lotion, gel or cream on your feet once or twice daily.  If you use one that is physician-strength, like Neostrata Lotion Plus or Neostrata Foot Gel Plus you will see improvement usually within 1 week or less.  Once you get them soft and smooth continue to use it at least several times a week (I personally use it daily) after your shower or bath.

We were there for vacation, first in Bangkok and then on the island of Phuket.  While we were in Phuket protesters against the Prime Minister stormed the Bangkok airports and forced their closure for over one week.  We were luckily stuck in Phuket, a beautiful tropical island, and not Bangkok.  Still, we were supposed to fly out November 30th and found ourselves stranded instead.  Most flights out of Phuket go through Bangkok and all other flights quickly were booked up for over oneweek.  Our hotel, the JW Marriott was very accommodating and let us stay until we were able to fly out.   The airports reopened yesterday and I am happy to say I am writing this from the Phuket airport, waiting for our flight back to Los Angeles.

Delaying our return 5 days sounds wonderful if you are in a nice place like Phuket, but the stress of not knowing when we could get back and also knowing I had 5 fully scheduled patient days I had to cancel, made those 5 days difficult to fully enjoy.  My staff was wonderful and took care of everything.  For those of you who unfortunately had to be rescheduled I apologize for your inconvenience.  My physician assistants have put in extra hours to try to accommodateas many patients as they could and I have increased my hours for the rest of this month to try to see as many of you as I can.

We did have a wonderful time otherwise however.  We rode elephants, snorkeled around Phi Phi island (where a deadly sea snake swam around my husband’s legs!), ate great Thai food and met the nicest people.  Thailand really is the land of smiles, the people are the friendliest, nicest I have ever met in a foreign country.  If any of you plan on going, and despite this hiccup on our trip I encourage you to go, let me know and I can recommend a few places in Bangkok and Phuket to visit.  I would definitely come back.

I look forward to being back in the good old USA in about 20 hours from now however.  There’s no place like home!
